Becoming American: August 1-Septemenber 22, 2018. A multi venue exhbition curated by Fionn Meade and Cat Clifford.
Part of an ongoing series of sculptures entitled Gun Dogs, Munroe’s newest collaged sculpturesDogs Eat Dogs, 2018, shown in Becoming American take up how dogs are often synonymous with attacks, hunting, police activity, and property protection in his hometown of Nassau, Bahamas. Often used as mascots for violent street gangs as well, this family was fabricated by Munroe during a week long residency in Seattle in advance of the exhibition. Responding to the recent realities of forced familial separation at the U.S. Border, the mother dog and her pups are united yet separated here, as they fight back against their coercive masters.
Also on view is Munroe’s painting, In a Kingdom of Ignorant Kings, 2018, which is drawn, in part, from reflections on the artist’s own upbringing, including the graffiti that was pervasive on the walls that surrounded his street. Often making an allegory from pieces of his own personal journey of survival and overcoming obstacles through self-determination, In a Kingdom depicts a group of boys unmoored but alert, lost but ready to defend themselves as they proceed on a difficult journey. Energetic and assertive in coloring and style, Munroe confronts contemporary society and the strained and difficult relationships between authority and people perceived as without regaining their footing.
