Chiharu Shiota spins a ghostly spiderweb in Copenhagen’s Cisternerne

A space ‘lost in time’

Almost a hundred miles of thread wrap around this disused Copenhagen water reservoir, which Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota has filled with a ghostly mesh.

The darkness of the subterranean space glows with light filtering through Shiota’s spiderweb-like installation, entitled Multiple Realities.

It’s the latest in a series of artworks hosted in the former cistern – located beneath Søndermarken park – which invites a different artist or architect to contribute each year. Once upon a time, the dank space was home to the city’s drinking water.

Shiota, who often uses suspended or woven threads in her work, has filled the cave-like Cisternerne with bright white filaments, trapping a single dress at the centre of the installation. The effect is of a space lost to time, wrapped in an eerie latticework of spider silk. The piece is on display until 30 November 2022.
