‚My work is a constant exploration of the medium of photography in a globalized world.‘

‚(…) The work of Viktoria Binschtok counters our new digital world—a world of economic and mathematical calculation—with the experience of contingency.
In so doing Binschtok sets out to filter the stream of phenomena with more clear- cut precision, extracting the paradoxes and distortions of our new world, a capitalist society geared to the media, consumption, and creating demand. The artist herself operates as a kind of search engine and, to preserve the subjectivity of her gaze, she takes care in choosing her filters. (…)‘

video tour through my exhibition ‚Not Until Tomorrow‘ at Klemm’s Berlin, 2020

(…) I am interested in the inherent dynamic of images in digital space:

this incredible presence and uncontrollable movement

in all directions at the same time.

They spread, leap from display to display, into our minds,

then back into the world.

And this loop of images,

this permanent movement between digital and physical space

reproduces knowledge about the world in which we live

and how we see it.

The images are not just supports for our mediated world,

our world is also shaped by them. (…)

NOT UNTIL TOMORROW

Nov 1- Dec 19 2020

solo-show at klemms-berlin.com

NOT UNTIL TOMORROW is as ambivalent as the visibility of digital images. They glow on displays then disappear again. They are not located in any one place, they can today be here, tomorrow there, in several positions at the same time or suddenly no longer visible.‘

‚By way of the dissolution of linear narrative, in Networked Images there is no difference between the essential and the inessential in the image: all can be important and equally unimportant.‘

‚It is a special time during which “business as usual” simply does not work. Digital spaces are all the more important for communication. Truly the best time to reflect on the networked exchange of images.‘ *

The Way We Are 2.0

Weserburg Museum of Modern Art Bremen

15.02.2020 – 02.01.2021

The Way We Are 2.0 brings together on 2,500 square metres more than 180 works from more than 100 artists from various times and contexts in a wide-ranging investigation of content and form. Thematic spaces arise from such perspectives as artistic approaches to identity or traditions of landscape, a varied play with everyday life or aspects of urban life, the meaning of coincidence or of the body, minimalist tendencies or social resistance.

Viktoria Binschtok

Our image-based reality lays the ground and provides the necessary input for the mixed media works that compose the exhibition Form, Class & Beauty. Through a diverse repertoire of appropriation strategies, public images are shifted into new contexts of meaning, which block themselves against obvious associations. The fusion of photography with text, algorithms, painting, and object leads to various combinations and opens up alternative perspectives on familiar representations.

Those are above all stereotypical representations of beauty, status, gender, etc. that dominate our urban and social environments (online and offline). They manifest cultural codes that set the bar of ideal existence in a system. Everything that cannot be seen in the general canon of images is also socially marginalized.

The artistic rearrangement of the fragments of our visual culture is staged here in what can be understood as aesthetically seductive assemblages – however, it does not exclude a critical examination of its impact.

‚with / against the flow‘ – contemporary photographic intervantions

curated by by Florian Ebner, head of the Department of Photography at the Museum Folkwang in Essen, and author Christin Müller, Leipzig.

15.12.2016

world premiere abroad: Georgian National Museum, Tbilissi

tiflis-opening

The exhibition series with/against the flow. Contemporary Photographic Interventions presents artists who live in Germany, have established their own distinct visual idioms and are now interrogating the medium of photography afresh. It is the forms that their artistic interventions take that connect their various positions. Regardless of what motivates the artists or what interests them in terms of content, in the work they do they intervene in the very substance of the image or in external reality itself. The question remains as to whether this work should still be labelled “documentary” or whether it is, in fact, a form of realism that spills over into fiction.

L’image volée, curated by Thomas Demand

Fondazione Prada Milan, 18.03.-28.08.16

http://www.fondazioneprada.org/projects/limage-volee/?lang=en
The exhibition revolves around the idea that we all stand on someone else’s shoulders, and explores how artists have always referred to existing imagery to make their own. Questioning the boundaries between originality, conceptual inventiveness and the culture of the copy, the project will focus on theft, authorship, annexation and the creative potential of such pursuits.

Situated in a special exhibition architecture by sculptor Manfred Pernice, the show will present 80 works realized by about 45 artists between 1820 and the present day, including commissions by John Baldessari, Oliver Laric and Sara Cwynar amongst others. An illustrated book will accompany the project, with essays by Russell Ferguson, Christy Lange, short stories by Ian McEwan and Ali Smith, and interventions by Rainer Erlinger and Don McLean, published by Fondazione Prada.

Originally considered in nonsite’s online journal (issue 11), the topics will be expanded upon by leading artists, philosophers, and art historians through a series of formal presentations accompanied by engaged responses, as well as two larger panel discussions with curator-moderators. ‚
