Lilith Performance Studio presents a new commissioned live performance -
PLÄSNT DSCHÖRNIE - New Moves a parafiction in the form of a moving company by the American artist Ethan Hayes-Chute.
Pläsnt Dschörnie came to life at Lilith in Nov - Dec 2019; the headquarters were populated by loading docks, transport trucks and numerous employees fulfilling various important roles backed by solid experience.
Pläsnt Dschörnie was no ordinary enterprise, but one that was passionately – almost obsessively – concerned with the satisfaction of its moving customers, their emotions, and needs.
The company appeared to offer a precision of labor bordering on absurdity, a form of care for the act of “moving” so elaborate, that in real life, no such company could exist because such levels of service would, especially in today’s fast-moving, profit-oriented societies, be wholly unfeasible.
Yet we did not know why, where, or when this moving company exists, or how it came to be. The company acted more as a state of mind than a physical space with its geographical location and customers being disconnected from a reality we can access.
With Pläsnt Dschörnie - New Moves, the idea of a functional system, a working force, directly linked with private people’s transitions in life, is explored through a peculiar and playful inner logic; decisions are not made based on their functionality or productivity, but rather on inner fantasies relating to games, power-structures, and the need for processing reality in one’s own personal way.
Visitors were welcome to go in and view logical processes and absurd happenings that make up a regular day of operations. Feel free to move freely according to certain guidelines and protocols and stay as long as you wish.
Ethan Hayes-Chute (b. 1982, Freeport, Maine) often explores vernacular approaches to everyday life. As a start of a new work, he goes through a role-playing process to determine the facts and figures behind the characters whose spaces he envisions. His main focus revolves around self-sufficiency, do-it-yourself mentality and human problem-solving capacities. He often creates spaces that lean towards the domestic realm that manifest in fragments, sections or fully enclosed variations.
Lilith Performance Studio is a non-profit arts organization and an independent arena for visual art performance established 2007 by the founding directors, artists and curators Elin Lundgren & Petter Pettersson.
The Studio commissions and initiates new major visual art performances by inviting visual artists from around the world, some of whom have never worked live before.
Each year, commissioned artists are given the unique opportunity to realize and present a new large-scale performance on site in the studio in Malmo, or elsewhere in the city, during a longer period of time and in close collaboration with the studio.
Since the inception 2007, Lilith Performance Studio has commissioned and produced over 50 major performances, and done several curatorial collaborations, guest appearances and art events and festivals, both internationally and in Sweden.
As a production space and an arena for visual art performance, the studio is the first of its kind in the world.
