Once one of the most prominent “Bad Painting” practitioners of the late 1970s and ’80s, Neil Jenney has produced a broad range of works that certainly look classic today. “Works of the Jenney Archive” constitutes a mini-retrospective with an emphasis on his “Good Paintings.” These object-paintings with thick artist-designed painted frames, and fragmented landscape images, such as North American Aquatica (2006), touch on ecological issues. Among the most intriguing works on view is a series of silkscreen-on-canvas “Statements,” featuring slogans like “ART IS A SOCIAL SCIENCE,” “IDEALISM IS UNAVOIDABLE” and “PAINTING IS SCULPTURE.” The later slogan is particularly apt for Jenney’s art, good and bad.
