Meet John

John Cavanaugh, an Omaha native with nearly 20 years’ experience in public service and community engagement is a candidate to represent the 9th District (Central Omaha) in the Nebraska State Legislature.

John works for the Douglas County Public Defender’s office, where he represents the poor and underserved of Omaha. A graduate of Creighton Prep High School, John received a Bachelor’s Degree in Politics from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. John received his Juris Doctorate from the Vermont Law School where he served as a Notes Editor on the Vermont Law Review, John also received a Masters In Environmental Policy from the Vermont Law school.

John serves on the Board of Directors of Mode Shift Omaha. He resides in the Aksarben/Elmwood Park Neighborhood with his wife Kakie McGill and their children. They are members of Saint Margaret Mary Parish. Cavanaugh is the son of Rep. John and Kate Cavanaugh, and the fifth of their eight children. Rep. John Cavanaugh served as a U.S. Congressman for Nebraska’s Second Congressional District from 1977 - 80.
