Samuel Buri

SAMUEL BURI "FLOATING APPLES" PAINTING, 1969

Samuel Buri (b. 1935) is a Swiss painter whose Neo-Expressionist style fused his love of the natural and figurative with illusory elements evocative of Op Art.

In the 1950's, an encounter with Sam Francis inspired a young Buri to become a painter. Since then, Buri has received significant recognition for his art works internationally, and continues to fill his dynamic oeuvre with eye-catching paintings completed in his signature style.

Buri's oeuvre features a strong interplay of color and shape, along with nature and illusion. Buri aimed to challenge the viewers eye and create pleasure in the viewing experience. To achieve this he employed spectral and complementary colors, as well as serial variations of colors. These colors were employed along with elements of Op Art like hard-edge lines, grids, and patterns. Juxtaposing those geometric lines was the delicate, Lyrical Abstract style he rendered his organic subjects in. Buri's primary motifs were from nature and included fruit still lifes, landscapes, trees, people, and flowers.

"Floating Apples" from 1969 is an excellent example of Buri's highly original aesthetic. At first glance the background appears to be a mountainous landscape completed in alternating bands of black and dark blue. Upon closer inspection the viewer can make out the shape of an apple incorporated into the landscape as well as the repetitious, identical outlines of the illusionary mountain range. Layered over top are hard-edge, horizontal lines in black, red, and a slightly lighter shade of blue. At times appearing to cover and bisect the background motif, these grid lines blend the figurative with the geometric for an eye-catching effect from afar or up-close.

In 1969, the same year he created this painting, Buri was chosen to exhibit at Kunsthalle Basel. Two years later he was selected to exhibit at São Paulo Biennial in 1971.
