Evil, twisted Huddersfield mum Agnieszka assaulted, beat and abused her son, and encouraged her partner Andrezj Latoszewski to do the same.

Sebastian Kalinowski died at just 15-years-old, isolated, vulnerable and alone, after months of sadistic abuse at the hands of the ones who should have cared for him. Kalinowska and Latoszewski were both handed life sentences on Thursday for the murder of the teenager. They were told they would have to serve a minimum term of 39 years behind bars before going before the Parole Board who will determine when they are safe for release.

During a lengthy and harrowing six-week trial at Leeds Crown Court, jurors heard details of the assaults carried out on Sebastian and gruelling exercises he was forced to undertake. They were sickened as they watched hours of footage showing this. Latoszewski could be seen pacing the family home in Leeds Road, Huddersfield, "posing" in the mirror and treating Sebastian like a punchbag.

Kalinowska could also be seen participating in the assaults and encouraging her partner - but a lot of the time, despite what was going on around her, she looked like she just could not care less. Hours of the footage showed Sebastian being pummelled and punched by his stepfather while Kalinowska was plonked on the sofa, gorging on takeaways and gulping from mugs.

It was horrifying to see.

But on Thursday, during the sentencing, the court heard how her rejection and carelessness of her son ran further back than 2021.

In his victim personal statement, Sebastian's father, Jacek, told how his son had lived with his mother until he was three-years-old but between then and him moving to England with her, he had seen her three times. He said: "The question is why? Why did you hate him to such a degree you let that psychopath treat him like that?

"How could you let your child be harmed? You took everything from him - his dignity and life."

Mr Kalinowski asked his former partner in his statement: "He was your son. You both wanted to infuse him with fear and destroy him but why? What did he do to you?...

"I loved Sebastian although I could not protect him from evil, evil inflicted upon by his mother. You did not even know your own child - you never wanted to care for him and left him when he was three-years-old. The only single memory you are going to have will be that of tormenting him. You never asked 'How is he how is he getting on with school?' You never knew his childhood dreams. You never saw him grow up or develop because you decided to end his life in such a brutal fashion. What kind of mother are you inflicting this suffering?

"The only experience he had of his mother was when he was 11 and when you gave him three lollipops. That is how you were remembered by your son. The fact you abandoned him was reflected in his psyche and he had to live with the awareness his mother had left him. You came to hate your child so much. You were offered the chance of your child's life, but you repaid him with hostility...

"Nobody forced you to take him, to bring him up and start being a mother. Why did you try and gain your parental rights? What for? A million questions without answers. When did you get to know you could not love him?"

As she jailed Kalinowska, The Honourable Mrs Justice Lambert told her she did not care about her son, and was only interested in herself. She quoted a letter sent from Kalinowska to Latoszewski from her prison cell while remanded in custody in September last year where she asked about the family cat.

The judge said: "Your only real worry about what had happened to your cat after your arrest. In this very long letter there was not one word about your son Sebastian, his death and the loss of his life...

"You did not care about Sebastian, you were only interested in yourself."
