Alex Hubbard will lead a private tour of his studio in conversation with Evan Moffitt, writer, critic and the Associate Editor of frieze.

Alex Hubbard works across painting, sculpture, and video. Hubbard’s diverse practice references art history and extends the prescribed characteristics of his chosen mediums. His video works are composed like paintings — a flattened plane onto which a series of actions unfold — and render visible the performative nature of the artistic process. They feature sequences of simple acts of creation and destruction, often executed in a slapstick manner. Hubbard’s paintings extend investment in the figure-ground relationship established within his video works. An early series referred to as “garbage paintings” were created using found objects fused into abstract compositions. A synthesis of painting and sculpture, his abstractions are created utilizing industrial mediums like resin, fiberglass, pigmented urethane, and auto-body paint.

Regen Projects will present a solo exhibition of Hubbard’s work in the fall of 2019. Recent solo exhibitions include Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham, MA (2014); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2012); The Kitchen, New York (2010); KunstHalle Berlin, Berlin (2010); and Midway Contemporary Art, Minneapolis (2009). Hubbard’s works have also been featured in group exhibitions at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2019); Marciano Art Foundation, Los Angeles (2018); Weatherspoon Art Museum, University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2016); Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach (2016); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2015); Museo Experimental del Eco, Mexico City (2014); Hessel Museum of Art, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson (2012); Le Consortium, Dijon (2014); and the 2010 Whitney Biennial; among others.

Evan Moffitt is a writer, critic, and the Associate Editor of frieze. His work has appeared in various publications, including Aperture, Apollo, Art in America, BOMB, Flash Art and The White Review. He previously served as Assistant Editor of the Los Angeles Review of Books and Associate Editor of Contemporary Art Review Los Angeles.
