Renata Lucas
9 Apr – 23 Jun 11
Renata Lucas specialises in architectural interventions of the physical landscape of the gallery or its surroundings. Preceded by a process of research and investigation into the physical and geographical conditions of the site, her work consists of subtle alterations and disruptions to architectural surroundings so that visitors move in and experience the environment anew.
Her works always stem from a direct reaction to the sites themselves, but her repertoire demonstrates a consistent approach, involving playful displacements characterized by the desire to subvert and disrupt existing order; overlaying, multiplying, bending and folding constructed space.
Renata Lucas was born in Ribeirao Preto and lives and works in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Recent shows include: Ernst Schering Foundation Art Award, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin, Germany (2010), Entre Desejos e Utopias, Galeria A Gentil Carioca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2010), Anna Strand/Renata Lucas, Malmo Konstall, Malmo, Sweden (2010), 53th Biennale di Venezia, Venice, Italy (2009), Short Time, Half House, Barcelona, Spain (2009), This is Not a Void, Galeria Luisa Strina, Sao Paulo, Brazil (2008), God is Design, Galeria Fortes Vilaca, Sao Paulo, Brazil (2008),
Renata Lucas' residency is supported by PIPA, a partnership between Investidor Profissional (IP) and the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro (MAM-Rio). Established in 2010, it seeks to award and promote artists whose practice is considered relevant and distinguished within both the Brazilian and international art market.
