Born in 1959 in Marrakech, Mahi Binebine moved in Paris in 1980 to continue his studies in mathematics, which he taught for eight years. He then devoted himself to writing and painting. He wrote several novels, which have been translated into a dozen languages. He emigrated to New York from 1994 to 1999. His paintings are part of the permanent collection at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. He returned to Marrakech in 2002 where he currently lives and works.

Ο γαλλικός τίτλος («Cannibales») και ακόμα περισσότερο ο αγγλικός («Welcome to paradise») δεν είναι τόσο εύστοχοι όσο ο ελληνικός που διαλέχτηκε και πιάνει την ουσία του μυθιστορήματος:δεν είναι το ταξίδι των μεταναστών προς την Ευρώπη, όσο οι ίδιοι οι μετανάστες, οι «Χαρράγκα: αυτοί που καίνε τα χαρτιά τους» και οι ιστορίες τους, αυτές που τους οδήγησαν να πάρουν την τεράστια απόφαση να εγκαταλείψουν (ίσως και για πάντα) τις πατρικές εστίες, την ζωή που είχαν, φίλους, συγγενείς, τα πάντα. Με κίνδυνο και να μην φτάσουν ποτέ σε αυτή που θεωρούν Γη της Επαγγελίας.
Ο Μαροκκινός γνωστός συγγραφέας Μαχί Μπινμπίν μας παρουσιάζει μια ομάδα Αφρικανών μεταναστών που ετοιμάζεται να ξεκινήσει από την Ταγγέρη προς την Ισπανία και μετά -αν όλα πάνε καλά- την Γαλλία. Αφηγητής είναι ο μαροκκινός Αζούζ και δίπλα του ο ξάδερφός του Ρεντά, ένας αλγερινός που έχασε όλη την οικογένειά του από τους ισλαμιστές, η Νουαρά με το μωρό της που αναζητά τον άντρα της στη Γαλλία, ο συμπατριώτης τους Γιασέφ, δύο απ' το Μάλι, ο διακινητής Μοράντ (που έχει απελαθεί ήδη τρεις φορές) και ο σιωπηλός οδηγός της βάρκας. Μεταφερόμαστε συνεχώς από το κοινό παρόν στο παρελθόν του καθένα και μαθαίνουμε όλα αυτά που τους οδήγησαν στο να μεταναστεύσουν. Οι λόγοι παρά πολλοί και όχι μόνο η απόλυτη καταστροφή που βίωσαν ως τώρα.
Ο αναγνώστης ίσως περιμένει περισσότερα από το πέρασμα προς την Ευρώπη. Δεν θέλει να πει αυτό ο Μπινμπίν. Θέλει να μάθουμε ποιοι περνάνε και λιγότερο πως περνάνε. Αλλά και τι τους περιμένει. Το βιβλίο αυτό γράφτηκε -δυστυχώς- πριν μια δεκαπενταετία. Στο μεταξύ το ταξίδι των «Χαρράγκα» έχει γίνει όλο και πιο μαζικό, όλο και πιο επικίνδυνο, όλο και πιο θανατηφόρο. Και στο τέλος του -πλεον- στρατόπεδα συγκέντρωσης.

Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Προσφύγων σήμερα και με αυτή την αφορμή, αλλά και λόγω της πρόσφατης τραγωδίας στην Πύλο, συνειδητοποίησα ότι η λογοτεχνία δεν έχει ακόμα ασχοληθεί με την προσφυγική κρίση στη Μεσόγειο, ίσως επειδή είναι νωπά τα γεγονότα και χρειάζεται μια κάποια αποστασιοποίηση ή επειδή αυτοί που τη ζουν άμεσα δεν έχουν την πολυτέλεια να γράψουν γι’ αυτή.
Το Χαρράγκα του μαροκινού συγγραφέα και ζωγράφου Μάχι Μπινμπίν το πέτυχα στο πρόσφατο παζάρι της Άγρας στη Δημοτική Αγορά Κυψέλης και επηρεασμένος από τα γεγονότα το αγόρασα και τα ξεκίνησα αμέσως. Διαβάζοντάς το νόμιζα ότι έχει γραφτεί την τελευταία δεκαετία, αλλά με έκπληξη είδα ότι γράφτηκε το 1999, άλλη μια απόδειξη ότι τελικά το προσφυγικό δεν είναι ζήτημα μόνο των τελευταίων χρόνων και ότι βιβλία υπάρχουν, αλλά μόνο τώρα που το θέμα μας αφορά άμεσα έχουν αρχίσει να μεταφράζονται στη χώρα μας.
Χαρράγκα είναι μια αραβική λέξη που χρησιμοποιείται για να χαρακτηρίσει τους πρόσφυγες που προσπαθούν να φτάσουν στην Ευρώπη με βάρκα και καίνε τα χαρτιά τους μόλις φτάσουν σε ευρωπαϊκό έδαφος ή τα πετάνε στη θάλασσα ή τα αφήνουν σε όσους μένουν πίσω για να τα καταστρέψουν όταν καταφέρουν να μεταναστεύσουν και να πάρουν άσυλο. Χαρράγκα είναι τα καμένα χαρτιά αλλά και οι άνθρωποι που τα καίνε. Χαρράγκα προσπαθούν να γίνουν και οι επτά ήρωες του βιβλίου που περιμένουν σε μια παραλία της Ταγγέρης για να περάσουν απέναντι στο Γιβραλτάρ, μέσα στο κρύο, την προσμονή και την απελπισία.
Εν αναμονή της κατάλληλης στιγμής για να επιβιβαστούν στη βάρκα που θα διασχίσει τα 17 μόλις χιλιόμετρα που τους χωρίζουν από το όνειρο, ο συγγραφέας παρουσιάζει σε μια μεστή και συγκινητική αφήγηση τις διαδρομές των εφτά αυτών ανθρώπων από διάφορα μέρη της Βόρειας Αφρικής μέχρι τη σύντομη συνάντησή τους: τα βάσανα, τις κακουχίες, τις ελπίδες τους και όλα αυτά που τους οδήγησαν στην απόφαση να ρισκάρουν τα πάντα για ένα αβέβαιο μέλλον. Η μελωδικότητα της γραφής θυμίζει θλιμμένο αραβικό τραγούδι που όσο το ακούς νιώθεις ότι κουβαλάει όλο τον πόνο του κόσμου. Κι όταν τελειώσει, δεν μπορείς παρά να σκέφτεσαι πόσες ακόμα ιστορίες κρύβονται πίσω από τους σοκαριστικούς αριθμούς της επικαιρότητας.

Binebine's novel immediately places us in the complex, sordid, and filthy--yes, filthy--business of migration over the Strait of Gibraltar from Morocco to Spain. Under no uncertain terms is this a journey to be romanticized, as the narrative makes clear by the contrast of "Paradise" in the translated title and the opening pages describing of Reda's gastrointestinal problems. (The original French language title, 'Cannibales,' functions differently) Yet this is simultaneously an opportunity to show the true courage of the narrator Aziz, who honors his cousin and admirably seeks his protection.
There is much to analyze here by way of each character's own personal journeys: their failures, lies, masquerades, and the Sisyphean way that the journey back and forth over the ocean seems to lend itself to an ultimate reading of despair.
My major contention with this novel, which I won't detail here, is its depiction of women; that the terms of 'heroism' is only understood via masculinist violence, but arguably the novel itself offers that critique. This would be an interesting work to contrast with Laila Lalami's Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits
There is much to analyze here by way of each character's own personal journeys: their failures, lies, masquerades, and the Sisyphean way that the journey back and forth over the ocean seems to lend itself to an ultimate reading of despair.

April 9, 2023i think,,,, i am going to refrain from rating this book for now....
it was hard to read in french (lots of interesting but confusing things happening with the timeline, tons of unknown vocab), and very difficult to find a coherent translation, so i feel like i didn't really experience the book as it was written to be experienced. the story is fantastic and insane, but i just can't give a fair review on the writing itself.
THAT BEING SAID!!!!
wild book, stories so horrible it would be difficult to come up with situations more devastating. really, really disturbing but in a matter-of-fact way that creates a very vivid idea of the worlds these people are trying to escape (the story of reda's twin and mother especially). ending was just the perfect final blow. all these stories / lives developed across the entire book dashed to pieces in a few sentences. read this for my french class on immigration and colonialism, which is so, so fascinating. i feel like french relations with the africa / the middle east have been a blind spot in my historical knowledge for a long time and i'm glad that is no longer the case.
with the amount that i didn't understand, or more accurately wasn't able to fully grasp / appreciate because of the language barrier, i am surprised by how engaged and moved i was. would love to read again some day when my french is stronger or with a better translation

I picked this little gem up at a used book sale. I originally picked it up because of the cover (yes, I will buy a book for the cover...) than I read the blurb from the book jacket:

So worth the 50 cents I paid for it.
The POV is from Aziz, a young man who travels with his cousin Reda. Both long for a better life. Aziz has been fortunate and is educated. However, dire circumstances put him on the path he finds himself. The other 5 people all have their own reasons to flee. We sit on the beach and learn their stories as they wait for the signal from out in the strait.
The writing is poignant through out
"...The world went on turning. No one bothered about us, it was as if we didn't exist, as if we'd never been born. So what did it matter if we were devoured here, or somewhere else, or on the open seas..."
"...as for the rest of my family, what had they done to be so utterly forgotten? They were buried in my mind like a handicap, sucked down to the depths of my conscience.....I had known from my earliest childhood that I was born at the wrong time, in the wrong place. I was a stranger among my kin, a soul forgotten by the heavens, lost in the mud."
A stunningly beautiful book-highly recommended.

Une lecture surprenante. Je ne m'attendais pas à autant apprécié cette lecture qui est abordé d'une façon assez décontracté, utilisant l'humour alors que le sujet traité est on ne peut plus sérieux.
J'ai ressenti de nombreuses émotions : colère, ennui, tristesse, joie, le choc... bref de tout.
Les personnages sont différents l'un de l'autre et ont pourtant tous le même objectif. Leurs histoires sont chacune touchantes à leur manière.
En soit, une bonne lecture aussi agréable qu'insctructive.
J'ai ressenti de nombreuses émotions : colère, ennui, tristesse, joie, le choc... bref de tout.
Les personnages sont différents l'un de l'autre et ont pourtant tous le même objectif. Leurs histoires sont chacune touchantes à leur manière.
En soit, une bonne lecture aussi agréable qu'insctructive.

Der Titel ist ein schreckliches Wortspiel... denn der Weg zum irdischen "Paradies" führt viele in das jenseitige.
Traurig.
Und trotzdem wird es steinerne Herzen nicht erweichen und hochmütige Hirne zu keiner Einsicht bewegen. In den Biografien und Geschichten der verschiedenen Personen wird ein ganzes Spektrum von "Zündfunken" für die Entscheidung zur Flucht ausgebreitet. Aber das "Brennmaterial" ist immer dasselbe: Armut, Zukunftslosigkeit, Demütigung. 500 Jahre Ausbeutung. Erst die Entdecker und Eroberer. Dann die Sklavenhändler, Kolonialherren und weißen Siedler. Dann die Globalen Konzerne und Marionetten-Diktatoren. Und es geht immer weiter.
Ich erinnere mich, wie vor 40 Jahren mein Sozialkundelehrer sagte: "Wenn die Industrienationen nicht aufhören, die Dritte Welt auszubeuten, dann wird es eine Völkerwanderung geben, und niemand wird sie aufhalten können." Das einzige, was sich geändert hat: man darf heute nicht mehr "Dritte Welt" sagen. Weil das diskriminierend ist.

I'm bumping it up a star because of the quality of the writing. Just based on my enjoyment of it, I'd give it 2. The overarching story is of North Africans waiting on a beach to be trafficked into Europe, for various reasons. Each character's back story is explored in more depth. The writing was quite lyrical, and I found many of the character's stories interesting. But the whole book was filled with so much sadness with very little hope. It is a very gritty novel, and I found myself wishing that we got to see some glimpses of happiness. Even when life is bad, there must be small moments of joy, right? It is quite timely right now with all of the news about Syrian refugees. I think this is an important reminder that for every story we hear on the news, there are hundreds more that we don't hear.

While Cannibales touches upon an important subject, I think its execution fell short. The narration style felt choppy and unbalanced as it went back and forth from present to past without any sort of transition, and some of the plot points seem to come out of nowhere just to make the story shocking without really adding a purpose, at least as far as I could tell. However, the ending is compellingly sombre and realistic, almost cyclically sad, and merits further discussion.

Best of the Morocco fiction I've read to date. The story is engaging while remaining just to the good side of being overly dramatic. The stories of corruption and various ways people suffer in North Africa are sad but probable.

Χαρράγκα. Αυτοί που καίνε τα χαρτιά τους. Mahi Binebine
Κάποιες ιστορίες χρειάζονται ωριμότητα για να τις προσεγγίσεις με το σεβασμό που τους πρέπει. Εμπειρία ως δημιουργός για να τις αποδώσεις και ως αναγνώστης για να ευεργετηθείς χωρίς να παρακάμψεις από άγνοια το μεγαλείο τους, ακόμα κι αν μοιάζει χιλιοειπωμένο, γνώριμο πια, ίσως και κουραστικό.
Στον πόνο κάθε πλάσμα αντιδρά, ίσως με μικρές ιδιοσυγκρασιακού τύπου ιδιαιτερότητες αλλά αντιδρά και για να λειτουργήσει όπως η φύση το (μας) έχει εφοδιάσει δε χρειάζεται διαβατήρια. Κανένα σύνορο δε σου υποδεικνύει το τρόπο αντίδρασης στον πόνο γιατί τα σύνορα είναι ένα τεχνιτό παραστράτημα που ο κόσμος διαπράττει, από εγωιστική αφέλεια τις περισσότερες φορές, απέναντι στη φύση. Το θέμα όμως με τις “τεχνιτές” παρεμβάσεις, όπως και τα μαραφέτια αυτού του κόσμου, είναι πως όταν χαλάνε, χαλάνε άσκημα και οι συνέπειές τους είναι καταστροφικές.
Η αξιοπρέπεια, όπως και ο πόνος που αναφέρθηκε, επίσης δε γνωρίζει σύνορα. Δε γνωρίζει χρώμα, φυλή, τόπο, ηλικία, καταγωγή, ήπειρο. Είναι εκεί και σε αφορά, όποιος κι αν είσαι. Κι αν δε σε αφορά είναι γιατί σε έμαθαν να μη πορεύεσαι με τούτη την αξία αλλά να υποκύπτεις, να υποφέρεις, να λυγίζεις και να μη διεκδικείς παρά μόνο στην εσχατιά της αγανάκτησης κι αυτό για το ελάχιστο και απολύτως απαραίτητο. Μαθαίνεις στο λίγο και μετά στο λιγότερο και μένεις σαν τον ενήλικα ελέφαντα δεμένος στο δεντράκι με ένα σκοινάκι λεπτό και εύθραυστο, χωρίς να διεκδικείς την ελευθερία σου γιατί σε έμαθαν από τα γεννοφάσκια σου σ’ αυτή την ισχνή ζωή που βάφτισαν μοίρα και πείστηκες πως η άλλη ζωή εκεί έξω είναι για σένα μακρινό και άπιαστο όνειρο.
Τι θα μπορούσα να πω γι' αυτό το βιβλίο.. Πώς να βάλεις κάτω τον πόνο να τον τεμαχίσεις για να κομψεύσεις τα λόγια σου και να κερδίσεις προσοχή; like; Share; Κάτι άλλο; Δεν ξέρω, δεν έχω ιδέα. Δεν έχω την παραμικρή ιδέα για πολλά που συμβαίνουν γύρω μας Ακόμα σοκάρομαι (κι εγώ απορώ γιατί), ακόμα αναζητώ πανάκειες, παράδεισους, κάτι άθικτο εκεί έξω για να πιστέψω, κάτι ευδιάκριτα ανθρώπινο που να μη χρειάζεται σκάψιμο για να το πετύχω ή εξόρυξη, κάτι που παρά την αυταπόδεικτη φύση του να μη χρειάζεται εκ νέου απόδειξη, κάτι που ως αυτονόητο να μη χρειάζεται διεκδίκηση ξανά και ξανά.
Το Χαρραγκά είναι σαν μια σαφής, ακριβή και γρήγορη "χειρονομία" που εκμεταλλεύεται όχι το συναίσθημα αλλά τη λογική μας για να καταδείξει τον παραλογισμό μας και την κατάφορη αδικία. Προκαλεί μια ανεπανόρθωτη ταραχή σ'εκείνο το "δε με αφορά" και το άλλο το καλύτερο το "τι με νοιάζει εμένα"!Καυτηριάζει με τρόπο εμπειρικό την απάθεια και την εξέγερση της ψυχής σου.
Το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο πρέπει να διαβαστεί απ'φον καθένα μέχρι να γίνουμε εκείνο το πολυπόθητο "όλοι" που δε θα εξαντλείται στην καλλωπισμένη έπαρση ενός προεκλογικού διαφημιστικού σποτ, αλλά θα φέρει όλο το βάρος της λέξης που κουβαλά στους ώμους του. Μέχρι η ανθρωπιά μας να μην είναι μια θεωρητική διάλεξη "περί ανθρωπιάς", μέχρι να γίνει η σπαρταριστή απόδειξη της ύπαρξής μας, μέχρι να μην καλλιεργεί την υπεράνω αίσθηση ψευδοθριάμβων κάθε φορά που την υποβιβάζουμε στη διεκπεραιωτική πράξη της φιλανθρωπίας, αλλά θα θεμελιωθεί για τα καλά ως αυτονόητη, αυταπόδεικτη και πανανθρώπινη αξία.
Κάποιες ιστορίες χρειάζονται ωριμότητα για να τις προσεγγίσεις με το σεβασμό που τους πρέπει. Εμπειρία ως δημιουργός για να τις αποδώσεις και ως αναγνώστης για να ευεργετηθείς χωρίς να παρακάμψεις από άγνοια το μεγαλείο τους, ακόμα κι αν μοιάζει χιλιοειπωμένο, γνώριμο πια, ίσως και κουραστικό.
Στον πόνο κάθε πλάσμα αντιδρά, ίσως με μικρές ιδιοσυγκρασιακού τύπου ιδιαιτερότητες αλλά αντιδρά και για να λειτουργήσει όπως η φύση το (μας) έχει εφοδιάσει δε χρειάζεται διαβατήρια. Κανένα σύνορο δε σου υποδεικνύει το τρόπο αντίδρασης στον πόνο γιατί τα σύνορα είναι ένα τεχνιτό παραστράτημα που ο κόσμος διαπράττει, από εγωιστική αφέλεια τις περισσότερες φορές, απέναντι στη φύση. Το θέμα όμως με τις “τεχνιτές” παρεμβάσεις, όπως και τα μαραφέτια αυτού του κόσμου, είναι πως όταν χαλάνε, χαλάνε άσκημα και οι συνέπειές τους είναι καταστροφικές.

Das Buch ist fast zwanzig Jahre alt und aktueller denn je... Binebine schildert die Schicksale eindringlich und schonungslos, mich überraschte, wie poetisch er dies zum Teil tut. Leider gibt es zwei Kritikpunkte für mich: zum einen hat er zu stark aufgetragen, so dass mich das geschilderte Elend durch die Übertreibung weniger berührte (reichen Armut, Hunger und Verzweiflung etwa nicht aus, muss noch familiäre Gewalt und sexueller Missbrauch hinzukommen?). Zum anderen lässt er keinen Raum für Hoffnung, was das Lesen zwischendurch schwer erträglich macht. Noch nicht mal die Hoffnung, die diesen Irrsinn antreibt und jenseits des Meeres wartet, wird deutlich. Alles dreht sich um die Verzweiflung.

Welcome to Paradise is a brilliant portrayal of a varied group of Africans trying to make it to Europe--with their back stories, struggles, and humanity portrayed with compassion by the author. This is really a fantastic short work, which lays out the reasons why people risk everything to make this journey, and why people in the destination countries need to be compassionate after their arrival.

This is a short, sad book about a group of people who dream of a better future. Admittedly, I had to read it for a class. It's not a book I would choose myself. But it's a good book to read if you're interested in humanizing migrants - because that's what it does. So that's why it gets 4 stars.

I read this book in Dutch, and out of interest of the current theme of boat refugees risking their lives to make it to Europe. It's so easy to pretend not to understand why people make such choices.
From the start, I was captured by Binebine's poetic way of writing. In spite of the storyline being quite filthy and even gruesome from time to time.
Even though there are some moments of happiness depicted in the book, it paints a gloomy story. Each of the characters we meet in the book feels to have come to a dead end in their lives. They have to get to Europe.
It doesn't end well, obviously. And in spite of being a person who favours happy endings, it couldn't have been any better. Europe's not very likely going to be a happy place for them: It's a cannibal world out there. Eat or be eaten.

Mahi Binebine is the first Moroccan writer I have read and I really liked this for the important subject matter it addresses.
The desperations and aspirations are finely portrayed, in a situation that has become an industry unto itself across Fortress Europe. The yearnings for European utopia are particularly touching as a reader from a Europe that is looking increasingly dystopian and unwelcoming of anyone not able to offer blood and profit.
I hope to read Mahi Binebine's other translated novel shortly. As a writer, I am unsure how well the translations are dealth with, which may explain the certain loss of story depth or character exploration outlined in previous reviews. I found this to be a well worthwhile read for those after real stories that are rarely told.

Impressive and harrowing. The writing (or should I say the translation) is at many times poetic and poignant, reaching its greatest heights when it describes the hopes of this group of people with their sights set on their new lives in France. Just putting that level of desperation into words for a group that's learned to remain silent and invisible is remarkable in itself; to do it in a way that feels so real, that doesn't have a hint of condescension but that surprises you repeatedly, is a real feat.

Een indrukwekkend verhaal over vluchtelingen uit een aantal landen die allemaal samenkomen om meegenomen te worden naar een kleine boot om de overtocht te maken van Marokko naar Gibralta. Elke vluchteling heeft zijn eigen redenen om te willen vluchten. Allemaal goede redenen. Gaat het hen lukken om niet door de politie op het strand opgepakt te worden en veilig de overtocht te maken? Maar het belangrijkste in dit boek is eigenlijk de achtergrondverhalen van de mensen zelf.

I won this book on a goodreads.com giveaway. I am not even sure how to write a review simply because I found the book to be quite bland. I was pretty shocked by one particular section where the main character spoke about his teacher having relations with him. I was not expecting that part. The characters themselves did have interesting backgrounds but the story could have been told better.
