Airport FlexBeam Birdcage

Northland Scaffolding were contracted to provide access for the removal of ceiling panels at Auckland Airport. Located in the airport’s domestic terminal, this Layher FlexBeam birdcage scaffold measured 36 metres by 18 metres, and stood 6 metres high.

The scaffold structure was designed to give unimpeded public access to all airport amenities. To achieve this, Northland Scaffolding used a combination of clever design, Layher Allround Lightweight Scaffolding and the versatility of Layher’s new FlexBeam product.

Auckland Airport different beams

Northland Scaffolding’s Chris Douglas explains, “back in 2019, we did the airport project (different stage) using Layher’s Aluminium Beams. This time we decided to use the new FlexBeam. Using FlexBeam meant we had a 30% saving in labour and the weight reduced from 46 ton to 35 ton [24%]!”

“The Layher Design Team worked with our team, and the Airport Authority, in a challenging environment to meet the client’s critical needs, with total satisfaction,” said Chris.

FlexBeam: faster erection times with a smaller footprint

Chris continued, “Wow! Once we got the set out sorted it was so quick and easy. For this project we made the decision to invest in Layher FlexBeam. We wanted to achieve faster erection times and a smaller footprint, giving us the possibility to achieve greater spans. Also, the benefits of using Layher FlexBeam on future projects like bridge hangers and other birdcages made the decision easy.”
