Tina Gillen (1972, Luxembourg) has been active as a painter since the late 1990s. She works on the interface between figuration and abstraction, between the flat surface and the space. Her work consists of layers that she visibly slides over each other. You recognize architectural elements from reality, such as facades and buildings, which nevertheless evoke a feeling of detachment. Gillen explicitly includes the exhibition space in her work. For BOZAR she made ECHO, a monumental installation tailored to the Council Chamber. Paintings and a sculptural element enter into a dialogue with a large mural on the back wall. Gillen invites visitors to take an active part and to make connections between the elements provided while walking. Exhibition: Bozar, Brussels, Belgium. Catalog of an exhibition at BOZAR, Centre for fine arts, Brussels, 25 September 2015 through 7 February 2016. Additional texts by Maggy Nagel and Paul Dujardin. Translated by Isabelle Grynberg, Kate Mayne, and Hilde Pauwels. Includes bibliographical references.
