His conceptual pieces, although loadedwith poetic intensity, remain unobtrusively subtle andeven almost quaint in its appearance. Coiled or foldedphotographs, his woven tales from found pictures in theinternet, the sawed off parts of a boat shipped to anothergallery, his shirt tied into a pole to commensurate aflag, these are the slightest of turns Gary-Ross hashis objects make to create a new text within. Born in1977 in Manila, he received his Bachelor’s degree inPainting from the University of the Philippines and washanded with the Dominador Castaneda Award for BestThesis, and was granted with residency programsin Japan and Bangkok.
Gary-Ross Pastrana, who was also a recipient of theThirteen Artists Award in 2006, participated inPulse New York and Pulse Miami in 2011 and 2010respectively. He is also the country’s representative forthe New Museum in New York’s 2012 Triennial ‘TheUngovernables.’ He is one of the co-founders of FutureProspects Art Space in Cubao, Philippines and hasregularly curated for shows both here and abroad.
