Abstract

This research project is all about our university curriculum system. And my research topic is

"Which curriculum better students prepare for the job market in Bangladesh? North American

Curriculum or local curriculum?" This research project gives me various information about the

undergrad studies curriculum. This research project got me to another level to find information

about this topic. And this research project helped me focus on where I have to focus in terms of

findings. In. In this research project, I hypothesize that the North American curriculum system

prepares students better for the job market. And based on my hypothesis, I surveyed to know

about my hypothesis which is right or wrong. I took the sample size of 36 students. And most of

my respondents are students from different universities; some were job seekers, and some were

jobholders. I added some questions like why the North American curriculum system is better

than the local curriculum system, why the North American curriculum is better than earning, etc.

And based on their responses, I got a surprising result. Most of the respondents agreed with my

hypothesis. This directly gave me such a message that my thought about the North American

curriculum system is correct.

Introduction

In Bangladesh, the job market is not consistant. A significant number of graduates are jobless or get paid

significantly less salary on the professional work. However, they are good at general job sectors like

government jobs or Civil services. On the other hand, few graduates are outstanding at professional work,

who get careers in multinational corporations and other international corporations or reputable companies.

And the exciting part is who works with a multinational corporation or other global corporation. They

followed the North American curriculum in their undergraduate studies and are suffering from the

professional job market they are from the local curriculum. They are suffering in the professional job

sector because the local institutions follow the old and conventional curriculum, and they also follow the

old syllabus. And this old curriculum and the old syllabus can't cope with the new syllabus curriculum

system. In the local curriculum system, there is some other problem. Most local institutions don't provide

practical training and even do not offer an intensive internship program. Graduates from local curriculum

do not know what to do in a workspace, what to behave and how to manage critical condition. But Most

of the students who graduated from North American curriculum already know about the manner of an

organization. So that they can easily cope up with the situation, which keeps the North American

curriculum ahead of the local curriculum.

My research focuses on which curriculum is better in terms of the job market and prepares students better

for Bangladesh's job market. How can they provide better education? How can an institution prepare

students better for the job market? Because the job market is shrinking and job seeker graduates are

increasing day by day, how can Bangladeshi institutions overcome this situation?

5
Background

This is very interesting in the research sector. This research project can help us to find a better

education system. And many research projects and articles have been published to find out which

curriculum prepares better their students for the job market North American curriculum or the

North American curriculum.

In Bangladesh, the job market is very vulnerable, and also it is shrinking day by day.

Furthermore, In Bangladesh, the educated unemployment rate is increasing recursively. The

website named macrotrends shows us how the unemployment rate of Bangladesh is growing

("Bangladesh Unemployment Rate 1991-2021", 2021). And this is growing faster than other

countries. In our countries, there are tons of articles published that show why the unemployment

rate is increasing. And why doesn't an organization want to recruit our graduates? A newspaper

called the business standard published an article titled "Without marketable skills, graduates state

bleak job prospects (Jasim, 2021). And the author of this article also said," Bangladesh's

education system produced 8 lakhs graduates in 2018, without giving them the skills required for

gainful employment". This article can help us to realize the current situation of the unemployed

graduates.

Many of the research projects and articles showed us the unemployment problem created by our

education system. The education system produced more and more graduates. They don't even

think about our job market, which skills are required for a job. And why most of the organization

is reluctant to recruit our graduates. However, in terms of skills, few graduates are very

professional and skillful. And most of them are studying the American curriculum in their

undergrad studies. The North American curriculum system is far better than the local curriculum

6
in terms of their education system. They create their students by giving skill and many other

practical experiences. Now their students are doing better in the job market.

Furthermore, most multinational corporations recruit their graduates. The graduates studying the

North American curriculum are better in terms of communication skills. They can work

flawlessly with a team, and they have better presentation skills than the local graduates.

Because of many limitations of the Bangladeshi education system, many students are willing to

study the North American curriculum system who are leaving Bangladesh. And the United States

Embassy In Bangladesh shows us the stats of the Bangladeshi students who are leaving

Bangladesh for better education ( Bangladeshi Students Studying in the United States Reach

New All-Time High, 2021). And most of the students who are performing their studies in

America think the North American curriculum system is better in providing better skills and a

realistic environment for the job market. So It is the best time to think about our curriculum

system, and we have to change our curriculum system. Also, we have to be more focused on

practical work and skills.

To find the research relevant topic, I had gone through some articles, websites, and journals. And

most of the information I got from the online source, articles and website show us the lack of

practical knowledge and the skill is the main problem for our graduates. In a real-life situation,

they cannot handle the workloads and pressure. If they have practical knowledge about the

workloads and skills, they can easily manage the situation. Here in this research project, my main

7
focus would be to reach out those question's answers to find out the actual scene so that I can

come up with a resolution for my project to say whether my hypothesis is right or wrong.

Research questions

In my research, I plan to investigate the Local curriculum and North American curriculum,

which curriculum prepares better students for the job market. To fulfill my research, I used a

variety of questions format like

● The close-ended questions, and

● Open-ended questions.

This combination of the Questions gives me clear information, making my resolution much more

accurate and factual. My research will address the following research questions:

➢ Which is the significant difference between the North American curriculum and the

local curriculum in terms of better learning?

➢ Which curriculum offers a more organized and practical curriculum, in terms of

professional work, you think?

➢ Why is the North curriculum better than the local curriculum?

➢ Why multinational corporations and international organizations choose employees

who studied the North American curriculum over the local curriculum?

➢ Why Government service choose employees from the local curriculum rather than

the North American curriculum?

8
➢ Why employees from the North American curriculum doing better than the Local

curriculum in a multinational organization?

➢ Why should Bangladeshi institutions follow the North American curriculum?

➢ What is the major problem of the North American curriculum?

➢ Why don’t Bangladeshi institutions change their curriculum?

➢ From Bangladesh’s perspective, Which system prepares their student better for the

job market?

Hypothesis

I think the North American curriculum prepares better students for the job market in Bangladesh.

From my obscure vision, most multinational or international, or reputable companies prefer

employees from the North American curriculum because they are very good at professionalism.

9
On the other hand, most of the employees who studied the local curriculum in their

undergraduate studies are suffering on their job. And some institutions started to try to change

the curriculum to cope with the job market in Bangladesh. So that I think I will be able to find

out why the North American curriculum is better rather than the local curriculum.

Research methodology

In this part of my research project, I followed two types of the Sources

● Primary source, and

● Secondary source

For my primary research, I will survey NSU students, other public university students, job

seekers, and those currently doing a job in the professional or public sectors. I hope to have a

sample size of about 25 to 30 people. I will also design a questionnaire with different types of

questions to get a range of valuable data, which will help me answer my research questions. My

primary research included

● Sample size

● Survey questionnaire in a google form, and

● Google sheets

As for my secondary research, I plan to use the library resources and consult several books and

websites, but I can’t use the library resources because of the global emergency. I also hope to do

some reading on the subject through academic journals, blogs, articles, and more.

10
Data presentation and analysis

I asked this question to my respondents, and I got this exciting result. No one from my

respondents goes with the local curriculum. They all think the North American curriculum is far

better than the local curriculum.

11
I asked this question to my respondents, and the results of this question are given below.

● 12 out of 36 respondents said the growth rate of the North American curriculum is fast.

● 2 of the respondents said the growth rate of the North American curriculum is very fast.

● 15 respondents said the growth rate is not very fast.

● And, 7 respondents said the growth of the North American curriculum is stuck in the

same place. The rate is not growing.

So from my survey result, I can say that the growth rate of the North American curriculum is not

very fast.

12
I asked this question to my respondents, and they answered me in such a way

● 12 out of 36 of my respondents said, The employee from the north American curriculum

is doing not so bad and not so well. They work like a moderate level of employee.

● 4 of the respondents said they are not working so well in a corporate environment.

● And 20 respondents said the employee from the north American curriculum is doing very

well in a corporate environment.

So, it could easily be said that most of the respondents go with the North American curriculum

system, and it also helps me correct my hypothesis.

13
I asked this question to my respondents, and their answer was primarily satisfactory.

● 5 out of 36 respondents said they are very smart.

● 8 of them said they are very professional at work.

● 11 of my respondents said they could cope with a diverse field and easily manage an

emergency situation.

● And, 12 of my respondents choose all the options right. Because they think they are very

smart and very professional in their work environment, they can easily handle an

emergency.

This research question can just easily match my hypothesis.

14
I asked this core question to my respondents, and they answered this question in such a way that

helps me clear my position.

● 4 out of 36 respondents said the North American curriculum system comparatively easy

to learn than the local curriculum.

● 17 of my respondents said the North American curriculum is more organized to learn.

● 11 of my respondents said It has better learning outcomes than the traditional curriculum

system.

● And 4 of my respondents said the North American curriculum offers a practical

experience like many case competitions, and it also offers an internship program to

complete the degree.

So I can say that all these options support my hypothesis.

15
I asked this core question to the respondents. And they answered this question in such a way.

● 80.70 % of the respondents go with the yes options. They think Bangladeshi institutions

should change their curriculum to cope up with the new transformed job market. They

believe the local curriculum is much more old and conventional.

● 2.80 %of the respondents said they are okay with the local curriculum system. And, they

go with the NO option.

● Moreover, 16.70 % of the respondents may want the change of the local curriculum.

They are not very clear about their position.

So, it could be easily said that my hypothesis is proved because most of the respondents agreed

with my thoughts.

16
I also asked this core question to my respondents. Their answer is given below.

● 6 of the respondents are not clear about their position. But they think the job market

prefers North American curriculum graduates rather than the local curriculum graduates.

● 2 of the respondents said that the new job market prefers the North American curriculum

graduates to the local curriculum graduates.

● And tremendously, 28 out of 36 respondents said the North American curriculum is the

dominant player of the new job market. These 28 respondents go with the yes options.

So, from these survey questions, it could be easily concluded that my hypothesis is correct. And

this answer also matches my hypothesis.

17
And In my open-ended question section, one person went with the no option, and he or she stated

this answer "I am okay with that curriculum.

Findings of the research project

18
Recommendations

This survey has identified that the North American curriculum system prepares better students

for the job market. And because of the old and conventional method, the students from the local

curriculum didn't do very well in the professional job market. So we have to replace our

curriculum system with a new and integrated curriculum system that provides more organized

and practical experience. And it will prepare better students for the next transformed job market.

Limitations

The significant limitations of this research project are the sample size. Only 36 people do not

belong to the whole family of the employer. It cannot represent all the employer and job seeker's

perceptions and opinions. There are a lot of external factors that can affect this research project.

And another major limitation is the global pandemic. In this pandemic situation, we cannot go

outside to collect my data, and I can't use my library resources because of the covid 19 it might

significantly affect my research.
