Ever seen a pad of postcards in binding? Maybe you have… But what we did for Irish artist Corban Walker, for his exhibition in the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork, is very special indeed. The object-book was designed to be reminiscent of a building brick, due to the architectural content of the exhibition.
With a format measuring 110 x 148 mm, this tiny book has all the ingredients for sparking one’s curiosity: the tarlatan cloth that keeps the pages together; the way the book is opened, enabling one to view the images completely flat and face-to-face; the two tones of the paper and possibility of starting at either end, as well as the silk-screen-printed letters in black and grey on the fore edge.
The images themselves are also attractive to readers: photographs of contemporary architecture installations, rich in colour and materials. Each double page is comprised of one matt and another gloss photo; to achieve this effect, we used a postcard-grade, 350 gsm White Folding Boxboard, offset on one side, and coated and gloss-laminated on the other. The other papers used are 140 gsm Arena White Rough, and 375 gsm Escudo Gris. The overall effect is colourful and pleasant.
Congratulations to the Oonagh Young Gallery for the graphic design!
From SYL’s perspective, this project involved a certain level of technical complexity, as a result of which we prepared several mock-ups and carried out research to find the appropriate cold glue for this kind of binding. And naturally, we took meticulous care over the production of the catalogue.
SYL specialises in printing and binding top-quality works: books on art, photography, architecture, and any kind of printed object that, due to its quality and complexity, requires specific processes and finishes.
