Saburo Murakami
Saburo Murakami (1925-1996), known as one of the core members of the Gutai Art Association (Gutai), presented a work known as "paper tearing" at the first Gutai Art Exhibition in 1955, in which he physically tore through a piece of Hatron paper. From the 1950s to the 1960s, Murakami pursued two-dimensional expression, showing large tableaux with strong strokes as well as work with performance elements. After the dissolution of "Gutai", Murakami presented work with his own performance elements.
While Murakami is often introduced as a member of Gutai, the exhibition held at the museum in 1996 dismantled the framework of Gutai and explored the world of Saburo Murakami as an artist and a person. This year marks the 25th anniversary of this historic exhibition and Saburo Murakami's passing.
This exhibition, along with the representative works of Gutai and his solo exhibitions in the 1970s, will show works from the period of the Shinseisaku Kyokai, which have rarely been introduced until now. In addition, the exhibition will display materials related to "Paper Tearing," as well as unpublished memos, related materials, documentary photographs, and video materials, providing a multifaceted introduction to his activities over the past 50 years. This exhibition is an attempt to create a new image of Saburo Murakami by touching on the different roots that have shaped him.
