BIODIVERSITY & ENDANGERED ANIMALS
On Thursday 28th July, the teachers
and students of PILL-RIZ together with
Mr. Crosby, travelled to the South
Australian Museum, followed by a
visit to the Botanic Gardens and a brief
stroll around the Adelaide C.B.D.
Whilst touring the Museum we were
able to observe many species of animals
along with their habitats. This further
extended our knowledge on our topic
of Biodiversity and Endangered Animals
that we have been studying this term.
We viewed animals that belonged to
four diverse groups including the Arid
climate, Wetlands, Coastal and Marine.
Some personal highlights of the
excursion included the giant squid,
block of ice, interac ve elements and
ge ng up close and personal with the
marine life!
The excursion was very interes ng and
informa ve and everyone had a most
enjoyable day!
Academic Success
On Wednesday, we acknowledged
and congratulated the high academic
achievement of the top 10% of girls and the
top 10% of boys in each year level. It was
a wonderful formal occasion celebrated
with pride by the College community.
At Gleeson College students are always
expected and encouraged to achieve their
best and to use their God-given talents
for the service of others and to create a
be er world. As stated in the Gleeson 10
– we want all of our students to be in the
pursuit of excellence in all they do; be lifelong
learners for a rapidly changing world;
and as a community we want them to
have pride in their successes.
In congratula ng the award winners,
I also want to acknowledge the many
students who did not receive a cer fi cate
but worked at their studies with great
commitment and endeavour. There is also
great success in achieving their personal
best and they should be proud of the
posi ve a tude they have brought to their
learning. A full list of our award winners is
included in this issue of The Globe.
A CELEBRATION OF SUCCESS
Leading Learning Grant
In The Globe last term, I men oned
that the staff at Gleeson are engaged in
establishing Performance Standards for
Years 8 to 10 in line with the SACE and the
emerging Australian Curriculum. It is my
pleasure to inform our community that
this school-based curriculum project has
a racted a grant from Catholic Educa on
South Australia (CESA). The money will
be used cover the cost of professional
exper se, materials, resources and
teacher release me. We are very grateful
for this support and recogni on from
CESA.
CESA Services Review
This year, under the guidance of the
new Director, Dr Paul Sharkey, CESA
is undertaking an extensive review of
its services and structure. The review
involved 12 inquiry groups working
on 12 important areas of service and
structure. At this point the CESA Services
and CEO Restructure Interim Report has
been published and CESA has begun the
consulta on phase with the stakeholders
of Catholic Educa on in South Australia.
At Gleeson College all staff are working
on responding to the document and a
student representa ve body will have the
opportunity to do so as well. We would
also like to invite parents to read the
review and off er any feedback to CESA
through the College. To this end we have
placed an electronic copy of the interim
report on the Gleeson College website
under ‘Publica ons’. The consulta on
phase of the CESA Review will end in Week
6 of the term, Friday 2nd September. If
you would like to comment on any area
covered in the review please send your
responses by email to me directly at:
Winter Sleepout
I would like to take this opportunity to
acknowledge and thank the enormous
number of students and staff that have
volunteered to be part of this annual
social jus ce event.
The Winter Sleepout gives students the
opportunity to appreciate the plight of the
homeless, especially the young homeless
of Adelaide, as they sleep rough for one
winter’s night. We have representa ves
from St Vincent de Paul a ending and
Fred’s Van will be in opera on giving our
students an insight into how they support
the homeless in our state. Our CSYMA
CHOOSING SUBJECTS
FOR 2012
This year all students will be entering
their subjects online. Our current Year
10 and 11 students have been introduced
to this process during Pastoral Care last
week. Parents were informed of this
process at our recent Careers and Subject
Informa on Night. Year 10 and 11 students
have been provided with a login code by
which they will use to submit their choices
through a series of dropdown menus.
Subjects are entered at the following web
address (click to go to website):
h ps://web.edval.com.au/mysubjects
Students in Year 10 and 11 have un l
August 17th to enter their subjects. A er
this date the website will no longer accept
subject choices.
I would advise students and parents to
read through the 2012 Senior School
Handbook before entering their subjects.
Students enter their subjects online then
bring a copy signed by their parents and
return it to their Home Group teacher. The
students’ choices will be discussed further
during the Course Counselling days on 8th
and 9th of September. During the term,
Year 8 and 9 students will also be provided
with informa on regarding the online
submission of subjects for 2012.
To download a copy of the 2012 Senior
Curriculum Handbook, go to the Gleeson
College website under ‘Publica ons’ or
click on the following link:
If you have any ques ons regarding this
process then please do not hesitate to
contact me at the College.
