Hybrid chip. Macro photograph of a hybrid integrated circuit (IC). A hybrid IC is one where two or more small components are mounted onto a single substrate and connected by wires or metallised tracks. The whole circuit acts as a single IC; individual components cannot be changed. Hybdridisation allows small, readily available components to be connected in a customised way, without the cost of a specific large-scale circuit design.
