Egypt / Netherlands: ‘The Banquet of Cleopatra’. Oil on canvas painting by Gerard de Lairesse (11 September 1641 - June 1711), c. 1675-1680. Cleopatra VII (69-30 BCE) was the last pharaoh of ancient Egypt and last of the Ptolemaic dynasty. In this scene from her court in Alexandria, Cleopatra has bet her lover Mark Anthony that she could host the more expensive banquet. After he accepted the wager, Cleopatra removed one of her pearl earrings, dissolved it in vinegar, then drank it. She is in the process of removing her second earring when she is stopped by former Roman senator Lucius Plancus. Basalt slab of Nectanebo IFound at Alexandria, Egypt. 30th Dynasty, around 370 BC. Nectanebo I (380-362 BC) was the first king of the last dynasty in the traditional structure of Egyptian chronology (the Thirtieth Dynasty), and the last major native pharaoh. His reign can be considered as a renaissance of art and building work. Many temples throughout the land benefited from his patronage; it was probably under Nectanebo that the first pylon (gateway) of the temple of Amun at Karnak was constructed. Massive mud brick enclosure walls were also built around many of Egypt's temples. The Pharos of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the World and the most famous lighthouse in antiquity. Built by Sostratus of Cnidus, perhaps for Ptolemy I Soter, it was finished during the reign of Soter’s son Ptolemy II of Egypt in about 280 BCE. The lighthouse stood on the island of Pharos in the harbour of Alexandria and is said to have been more than 350 feet (110 metres) high, but sadly the lighthouse was severely damaged by three earthquakes between AD 956 and 1323 and became an abandoned ruin. A late 19th Century illustration of the destruction of Roman temple in Alexandria, Egypt. Founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great, the city became the capital of Egypt, its major port, and then the major center of the widespread Hellenistic civilization. In 391 AD, Theophilus, the patriarch of Alexandria, was encouraged to oppress paganism in Alexandria by edicts calling for the strict enforcement of Christianity as an official religion of the empire; hence the destruction of the pagan temple.
