RM2CACFAF–An old cigarette card (c. 1929) with a portrait of Pierre Curie (1859–1906) and an illustration of his discovery of uranium extracted via pitchblend. Curie was a French physicist, a pioneer in radioactivity. In 1903, he received the Nobel Prize in Physics with his wife, Marie and Henri Becquerel. Curie worked with his wife in isolating polonium and radium. They were the first to use the term 'radioactivity' and were pioneers in its study, including Marie Curie's celebrated medical work. Uraninite, formerly pitchblende or pitchblend, is a radioactive, uranium-rich mineral and ore.

In 1903 the Nobel prize was awardedjointly to the Curies and Becquerel for the discovery of radio-activity and the new radio active substances. Cranium had been extracted from the pitchblende ores ofSt. Joachimsthal. The Curies found the residues were moreradio active than the remaining uranium accounted for, and thisled them to suspect the presence of something hitherto un-known, of greater radioactivity than uranium. After a long research under hardships and poverty, theyfinally succeeded in getting a radio active constituent con
