RM2B01G4P–China/USA: Frederick Townsend Ward (29 November 1831 - 21 September 1862), American sailor, mercenary and soldier of fortune famous for his military victories for Imperial China during the Taiping Rebellion, 1861. Frederick Townsend Ward was born in Salem, Massachusetts. Aside from working as a sailor during the 1850s, Ward found employment, as a 'filibuster'. 'Filibustering' is 'raising private mercenary armies and leading them into other countries to advance either [one's own] schemes or those of wealthy sponsors'.
